The Yak-42, NATO dubbed 'Clobber', is a short to medium-range, tri-jet passenger aircraft developed in the late 1970s to transport up to 126 passengers at ranges of up to 3,000 kilometers. The Yak-42D is an improved range version introduced in 1988. Powered by three D-36 turbofans the Yak-42D has a maximum range of 2,790 km. Currently, the Yakovlev design bureau intended to upgrade the Yak-42 through the replacement of D-36 engines (rated at 6,500 kg of thrust) by more powerful, fuel-efficient D-436 engines each rated at 7,500 kg of thrust. The re-engined Yak-42 would offer increased takeoff weight, cruise speed and flight range as well as improved flight performance.
